Omega Constellation Automatic Silver Dial Men's Watch 13030392102001

With the new year comes new watches, and with plenty of series celebrating anniversaries this season, just days and months now different the market from some potentially very interesting updates. Among the versions celebrating friendships is the Omega Constellation, that turns 65 years old in 2017. This will also be the 35th year of production for its Constellation’s “Manhattan” version. The Constellation series is highly valued band by Omega lovers, both in its vintage and contemporary versions, so this year could mark a significant evolution of the lineage at a more historically-oriented way — as the release of the Globemaster failed in 2015. As mentioned, the Constellation series was founded in 1952 and featured “pie-pan” dials. These bits came in aluminum, steel gold, and occasionally even platinum; often featured geometric hour markers and dauphine hands; and were held in high esteem for their superior timekeeping. These are the models which have gone on to inspire the Globemaster manufacturing line (seen below), but are layouts that have more or less been under the radar since the late 1960s. These watches, while sharing the Constellation name along with the signature observatory emblem on the caseback, were different compared to pie-pan models of yesteryear. They were developed using quartz movements (Omega did not release a mechanical, automatic version till 1985), were comparatively thin, had integrated bracelets and very different dial configurations, and also, most notably, included four claws around the bezel to secure the crystal to the remainder of the circumstance. They were very much a product of the 1980s, but have kept a strong place at the brand’s lineup at the decades since, with both men’s and ladies’ models out there.

About the back, the usage of dauphine hands and tick hour markers are more reminiscent of their pre-Manhattan variations of the series compared to pole hands and Roman numerals found in the 1980s. Finally, the concluding techniques on the modern version are a lot more elegant than previously; note the sharper edges on the case, the brushed appearance compared to the first’s polishing, and also the general higher quality of this watch as evident because of its increased thickness and sturdiness throughout.Of course, there are also many shared characteristics between the historical and modern versions. The differences lie mostly in the overall styling, positioning of features, and finishing. The watch still keeps its general shape, but it is thicker, with a flimsy bracelet; it uses Roman numerals, but they’re engraved on the bezel rather than applied to the dial. The watch keeps its distinctiveness, but at contemporary, luxury Omega standards. The Omega Constellation Manhattan line retains a unique place for me personally: it was one of my first “actual” watches out of the cheaper, more disposable bits that preceded it, a watch gifted to me by my father (really, “talented to me by” should read accurately as “stolen from”), which more or less introduced me to the wider world of watches that is today covered in watch books and online forums. But with this year marking another anniversary to the series, and with a growing focus by Omega on its historic foundations, it will be interesting to see in which the newest ventures alongside one of its most families. Whether this is having a renewed focus on pre-Manhattan variants in the Globemaster line, or possibly a curvier model in homage to the 1980s timeless, it would surely be among the more fascinating releases of the year.

As I wrote previously, the Constellation is obviously a chronometer watch. A certificate that proofs the high accuracy of a motion. Aside from the Constellation, various other households of the Omega collection also contained watches that had a chronometer rating. On the other hand, the classic Omega Constellation being the flagship of this brand at that time were all rated chronometer.Omega, the final letter of the Greek alphabet, symbolising accomplishment and perfection, sums up the qualities of the world leading watch manufacturer. They might be made by guys, but here the newest version for the fairer sex takes centre stage.Known in astronomical circles for its ‘Moon Watch’, OMEGA has chosen to reach for the stars with its newest women Constellation. Much the style watch at the fantastic sense of the word, the Constellation is the best mix of practical function and cocktail elegance.Available in two variations — a 24mm quartz along with the more automatically interesting 27mm automatic — the OMEGA Constellation Star has a serious message, with profits from the sale of every piece being donated to ORBIS International’s Flying Eye Hospital, which delivers medical aid in over 90 nations. When treating yourself (or someone else) to this view, you can banish the guilt and actually feel quite good about yourself. The strong small brushed steel case is both pure and simple — some more detail would detract instead of add. Though the diamond-set bezel, interrupted only by the Constellation’s signature griffes (introduced in 1982 to hold the sapphire crystal set) on the side of the case, provides just the right amount of sparkle to make the piece feel feminine without being blingy.

Even if, like me, you prefer your own watches a little larger and more, in the primary, stone-free, the ideal proportions of the Constellation will seduce you. The sporty appearance combined with the elegant design and fabulous fit are sure to have the largest diamond-phobes star gazing in virtually no time. Chances are – regardless of how long you’ve collected Omega vintage watches – you haven’t stumbled upon this neo-vintage masterpiece. Produced in 1995, the right lugged Omega Constellation Chronometer Electronic F300hz ReplicaSkeleton previously was one of just twenty pieces produced in white gold. Two other editions with this altered Manhattan case fashion were released in batches of twenty five bits in yellow gold and pink gold. A additional fifty bits in the up-dated Manhattan incorporated bracelet case were produced in eighteen karat solid gold. In all, only one hundred and hundred star Constellations were produced. The Skeleton collection followed the following limited-edition string, the Manhattan Observatory Collection of fifty numbered pieces comprising a good gold dial with a cloisonné observatory centre disk. The two collections were made for the launch of the Constellation Manhattan face-lift, and appeared in the Watches and Jewellery exhibition at New York in 1995. The Constellation Skeleton movement is a version of the Omega automatic chronometer 2120, which was based on the Horological Hall-of-Fame ETA calibre 2892-A2. Designated as a calibre 2125 because of its superb craftmanship, the motion was skeletonised completely by hand to reach lightness and sophistication without undermining its robustness and precision. Several have changed hands privately, but I cannot remember having seen a surface at a public auction.
